The mechanical timer counts down from 60 minutes and switches off at the end of cooking, but the steamer doesn't switch off if the water runs out, so you'll need to keep an eye on it. There's a water gauge with minimum and maximum marks and water can be added midway through cooking via the water adding point.

There's no need to disassemble and risk painful steam burns just to top up the water. Our pudding basin didn't quite fit into the steamer and none of the steam baskets has removable bases, so it's not as versatile as some on the market. In our tests, chicken and salmon both took longer than the times listed in the instruction manual but results were good and vegetables were al dente. Rice steamed in the rice bowl was cooked but sticky and stodgy, the instruction booklet says not to use the drip tray when cooking rice, but this meant water dribbled all over the counter during cooking. The steam baskets are transparent, which is useful for keeping an eye on food during cooking. But they aren't dishwasher safe, so cleaning it can be a bit of a pain.
