How To Play .idx Files In Vlc
I got a film that came with 3 diff file types-. Mkv,.sub, and.idx. Only the mkv files will play on any player i tried- VLC and XinePlayer. For the.sub files, someone said the prob could be that the file was UTF-16 encoded and VLC currently does not support this. You can use an advanced text editor to resave.

You can use an advanced text editor to resave the file in the UTF-8 text encoding. But i opened the.sub file in TextWrangler and it was just a bunch of gibberish. I found diffferent subtitle files in a.srt format, but they won't play either.
I tried several different file sources to make sure it wasn't just a bad file, but none of the.srt files would play. Someone said try WindowsMediaPlayer for Mac, but that wouldn't recognize the file types. And what are the.idx files supposed to be?
They won't play, but my comp says they are 'Divx Player Documents' but Divx says it isn't a 'supported file type'. XinePlayer said it didn't recognize it as a movie or audio file, and VLC didn't either. Anyone have ideas? Update: To Mac-fixit, the first responder: Did you read the details I gave? Update 3: FOUND MY OWN ANSWER: Looked on VLC website and wiki.
They suggested changing the text encoding. I went to VLC: then chose my language's ISO (ISO-8859-1, which is for most Western European languages, including English) then pressed Save and restarted.

I went to VLC: then chose my language's ISO (ISO-8859-1, which is for most Western European languages, including English) then pressed Save and restarted VLC. When I restarted the video, I went to the dropdown menu and selected desired language, then the subtitles played.
I am having the same issue all of a sudden, but I do not believe that any of these answers is working for me. Normally the VLC Player automatically adds the subtitles file, and you can see this when you right click on screen and choose subtitles. It will show a number of different tracks, and this one only has the one srt file with it, and it is in the same file with the same name, and the player says it is on Track 1. Unfortunately, then when you play the movie there are no subtitles at all??

I am starting to think the srt file is corrupted somehow, and that is the cause!!. Tell us some more. Upload in progress.

Two Methods: An IDX file is an index file extension commonly used in Windows to speed up the search process in a database, or to quickly retrieve and sort files in directories. IDX files are also commonly used in DVDs and movie files that contain subtitles. Most Windows and Mac computers will automatically open IDX files using the program the files originated from. However, if an IDX file won’t open on your computer, you can try opening the file using the VideoLAN VLC media player, which can open and support most types of IDX files.
